Choosing lovely thoughts!

Choosing. Making a choice. A car races past us on the highway, weaving in and out of traffic and speeding off out of sight.

Choice #1: What a jerk! Where are the police when you need them? They are going to end up in a wreck and really hurt someone. That’s ridiculous!

Angry Thoughts

Choice #2: His wife must be in labor and he is rushing her to the hospital – OR – what if he just got a call that one of his children was rushed to the hospital or needed to be rushed to the hospital. We pray he is safe and makes it with plenty of time to spare. 

Happy Thoughts

Thinking polar opposite thoughts creates totally different feelings. What makes the first thought any more real than the second? Nothing. Choose lovely!

Aye, Ca rumba, Lucy!

Okay, I don’t know exactly how to spell it but I know how it sounds as I have heard Ricky say it to Lucy at least a million times! My last blog was about positive thoughts and choosing to think lovely thoughts.

My dad died a few years ago and we built a house with two master bedrooms so my mom could come and live with us. We have moved her seven times. She lived here a couple of years, didn’t like it, moved back to her home town to a retirement village, didn’t like it, and two weeks ago moved back in with us. Talk about taking my thoughts captive. I am practicing it more than ever.

For instance: I get up two hours before I have to start getting ready for work so I can have an hour for my daily devotion, an hour immediately following to have coffee with my mom and my husband, then time to get ready. I should ignore my phone until I am ready for work but I haven’t mastered that yet (my next self improvement project) so I am often running out the door with my purse, my glasses, laptop in case only for my sweet little mom to say, “Jody, do you have time to help me with the VCR and look at these insurance papers”?

Oh my goodness – such guilt! The old me would let it ruin my day with either guilt or anger. The new me told myself she is independent enough that she hates to ask me to help her and she knows how busy I am so just when is a good time? Now, while we are having coffee, I say, “Mom, is there anything I can help you with or do for you before I get ready”? She feels honored and I am not caught unprepared! Life is good!

I totally believe our thoughts are extremely powerful.  My life completely and totally changed the day I learned that what I “feel” and what I know to be true are not always the same. Thoughts come into our minds at an astonishing rate every day all day long. We process thousands of words each day. Where are those words coming from? Some come from outside sources but mostly from our own thoughts.

I have a mild obsessive compulsive disorder and can really obsess about things that nag at my brain.  For much of my life, I would wake with a feeling of dread and spend the majority of the day trying to figure out what terrible thing was about to happen? Financial failure, illness, or death of someone I love? I thought it was a warning, a sign from God, a premonition.  I didn’t know it was me.  Just me! Totally me! I learned that I don’t have to entertain every thought, every dreadful thought, which comes into my head. I can reject those thoughts and choose to think positive, lovely thoughts. In regards to a sign from God: His Word says that He has not given us a spirit of fear and that we should take every thought captive. Since I know that where the mind goes, the woman follows, I’m thinking lovely thoughts; thoughts of health, of prosperity, of goodness, kindness. Think on these things.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
